Youth Director Position Description/Background

Islamic Institute of Orange County (IIOC) currently has a growing youth program that serves the needs of many youth of all ages. The challenge facing IIOC’s youth is that the Muslim population is rapidly growing, yet the programs provided are not running at maximum efficiency. The youth program is managed on a volunteer basis. In order to maximize the performance and efficiency of youth programming, IIOC has created a “Youth Director” position. This is a part-time, paid position responsible for the oversight, management, and improvement of existing programs, in addition to the development of new programs. The Youth Director will report directly to the president of IIOC.

Location

Islamic Institute of Orange County is located at 1220 N. State College Blvd. Anaheim, CA at the Placentia  & State College Cross Streets.

Qualifications

  • Must have strong communication, organizational and leadership skills
  • Must be a highly motivated individual who is passionate about Islam as a way of life and guiding young Muslims as a career
  • Must possess a Bachelor’s degree or have equivalent experience in youth development, psychology or a related field
  • Must have a strong understanding of Islamic etiquettes, manners, and appropriate behavior
  • Must have an adequate understanding of the fundamentals of Islamic teachings
  • Must have a thorough understanding of challenges and hardships Muslim youth face in Southern California
  • Must speak fluent English
  • Must have a strong familiarity with basic computer skills: typing, internet, email, Microsoft Office suite, etc.
  • Must be willing to learn additional computer applications as needed for the position
  • Must have the ability to relate well to elementary age youth, teenagers and adults
  • Must be willing to complete administrative responsibilities and properly document progress through detailed reports
  • Must possess the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines with a positive attitude
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Is preferably born and raised in America

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Friday Night Youth Program for ages 7 and up
  • Oversee youth Ramadan activities
  • To develop a weekly program [once a week] for middle school youth to socialize, learn Islam, and develop their character
  • To develop a weekly program [once a week] for high school youth to socialize, learn Islam, and develop their character
  • To develop a weekly program [once a week] for college aged young adults to socialize, learn Islam, and develop their character

Potential Future Activities

  • Develop leadership programs for qualified youth
  • Develop an annual Parent/Youth Relations Seminar
  • Develop confidential counseling services for troubled youth
  • Develop educational/recreational programs for college-aged youth with the local college/university MSAs
  • Develop a strong network of college MSAs in the region and serve as an advisor
  • Develop new learning & development programs for youth
  • Develop an annual Islamic quiz competition for youth (different ages)
  • Develop a big brother/sister program

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in meetings with other chairpersons, directors, and staff as needed; and perform other duties as requested
  • Assist with and/or create special events
  • Support other IIOC campaigns, initiatives and events
  • Communicate and coordinate with the religious authorities of IIOC

Hours & Compensation

Part-time per Diem: approximately 10-20 hours/week [may vary]

Compensation: $15/hr
